Marukin Ramen (丸金拉面)

Objectively speaking, the ramen here was acceptable...if you are looking for non-pork alternatives. Yes, that's right. This place sells chicken-stock ramen with chicken char siew. Only! The tsukemen was accepted but the chicken was really bland/pathetic. Similarly the gyoza was tasteless. In addition, it's not cheap and no table water provided (but has wet tissue...which would you rather?), though at least no service charge either since one got to self-order at the counter.

Verdict: Never again! (unless you are looking for non-pork options)

Tajimaya

Only ate here because of the new AMEX-Palate tie-in: 50% off a la carte menu. Unfortunately, the food was not impressive. The main criticism was that all the meat tasted similar. They all had the same marinate, and although this was to be expected for a BBQ meal, it would have stood out more if the meats had different marinates or they were such exceptional quality that no marinates are required and one only experience the true flavour of the meat. Especially so when the price one pays is not exactly cheap (if without discount). The wagyu tongue with leeks and salt, and rosu were passable, the karubi and pork belly were good. The kajiki was alright after grilling it (but needed more seasoning). The mushroom mix was quite generous, and the surprise standout was the sweet potato, which you don't often get to order at such establishments. Grilling the roots gave it a nice, crunchy caramelised layer and taste. The garlic fried rice was too salty (too much shoyu). Lastly, no water!!! Only have Evian, but at least they have draft Kirin on tap which was quite good. Beer and yakiniku, yum! Too bad I got bored of the food after 30 minutes. At least I did not stink at the end of it all. Oh, and waiting for the bill took 15 minutes, and another 5 minutes when I went up to the cashier itself, as they screwed up the palate-discount. Which reminds me...when I called in to make a reservation, I was informed that they were full for dinner and try to walk-in. Guess what? So not full!! They could have just said they do not take reservations...

Verdict: Won't be going back unless someone else want to eat there particularly, and definitely not if there was no discount!
