A political whodunnit caper that tried so hard to be an absurdist farce but failed so spectacularly. A brilliant cast that tried their damnest - and the core trio of Christian Bale, John David Washington and Margot Robbie had great chemistry together - but were failed by writer/director David O. Russell in one of his laziest written and flattest direction. Not even Emmanuel Lubezki’s soft and sumptuous cinematography could save this film from its own undeserved sense of grandeur. Sure, the themes were topical and the premise was interesting, but other than the the slew of stars peppered throughout the film, there was nothing holding the film up together throughout its exhausting 134-minutes run! Perhaps some judicious editing and tighter storytelling could have saved this film, because, really, the cast deserved better.
